32 but Peter and those with him were heavy with sleep, and having waked, they saw his glory, and the two men standing with him.

33 And it came to pass, in their parting from him, Peter said unto Jesus, `Master, it is good to us to be here; and we may make three booths, one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah,` not knowing what he saith:

34 and as he was speaking these things, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them, and they feared in their entering into the cloud,

35 and a voice came out of the cloud saying, `This is My Son -- the Beloved; hear ye him;`

1 Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.

2 And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.

3 And he said to them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor money, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece.

4 And whatever house you enter into, there abide, and there depart.

5 And whoever will not receive you, when you go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them.

6 And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where.

7 Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him: and he was perplexed, because that it was said of some, that John was risen from the dead;

8 And of some, that Elias had appeared; and of others, that one of the old prophets was risen again.

9 And Herod said, John have I beheaded: but who is this, of whom I hear such things? And he desired to see him.

10 And the apostles, when they were returned, told him all that they had done. And he took them, and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida.

11 And the people, when they knew it, followed him: and he received them, and spoke to them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing.

12 And when the day began to wear away, then came the twelve, and said to him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns and country round about, and lodge, and get victuals: for we are here in a desert place.

13 But he said to them, Give you them to eat. And they said, We have no more but five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy meat for all this people.

14 For they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by fifties in a company.

15 And they did so, and made them all sit down.

16 Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and broke, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude.

17 And they did eat, and were all filled: and there was taken up of fragments that remained to them twelve baskets.

22 Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.

23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

24 For whoever will save his life shall lose it: but whoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.

25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?

26 For whoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels.

27 But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.

28 And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.

29 And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering.

30 And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias:

31 Who appeared in glory, and spoke of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.

32 But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.

12 Now the day began to draw to a close, so the twelve came and said to Jesus, "Send the crowd away, so they can go into the surrounding villages and countryside and find lodging and food, because we are in an isolated place."

13 But he said to them, "You give them something to eat." They replied, "We have no more than five loaves and two fish— unless we go and buy food for all these people."

14 (Now about five thousand men were there.) Then he said to his disciples, "Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each."

15 So they did as Jesus directed, and the people all sat down.

16 Then he took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven he gave thanks and broke them. He gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd.

17 They all ate and were satisfied, and what was left over was picked up— twelve baskets of broken pieces.

27 But I tell you most certainly, there are some standing here who will not experience death before they see the kingdom of God."

28 Now about eight days after these sayings, Jesus took with him Peter, John, and James, and went up the mountain to pray.

29 As he was praying, the appearance of his face was transformed, and his clothes became very bright, a brilliant white.

30 Then two men, Moses and Elijah, began talking with him.

31 They appeared in glorious splendor and spoke about his departure that he was about to carry out at Jerusalem.

32 Now Peter and those with him were quite sleepy, but as they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him.

33 Then as the men were starting to leave, Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us make three shelters, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah"— not knowing what he was saying.

41 Jesus answered, "You unbelieving and perverse generation! How much longer must I be with you and endure you? Bring your son here."

43 Then they were all astonished at the mighty power of God. But while the entire crowd was amazed at everything Jesus was doing, he said to his disciples,

44 "Take these words to heart, for the Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men."

45 But they did not understand this statement; its meaning had been concealed from them, so that they could not grasp it. Yet they were afraid to ask him about this statement.

46 Now an argument started among the disciples as to which of them might be the greatest.

47 But when Jesus discerned their innermost thoughts, he took a child, had him stand by his side,

48 and said to them, "Whoever welcomes this child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me, for the one who is least among you all is the one who is great."

49 John answered, "Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him because he is not a disciple along with us."

10 When the apostles came back, they told Jesus what they had done on their trip. Then he took them away to a town called Bethsaida. There, he and his apostles could be alone together.

11 But the people learned where Jesus went and followed him. He welcomed them and talked with them about God's kingdom. He healed the people who were sick.

12 Late in the afternoon, the twelve apostles came to Jesus and said, "No one lives in this place. Send the people away. They need to find food and places to sleep in the farms and towns around here."

13 But Jesus said to the apostles, "You give them something to eat." They said, "We have only five loaves of bread and two fish. Do you want us to go buy food for all these people?" There are too many!

14 (There were about 5000 men there.) Jesus said to his followers, "Tell the people to sit in groups of about 50 people."

15 So the followers did this and everyone sat down.

16 Then Jesus took the five loaves of bread and two fish. He looked up into the sky and thanked God for the food. Then he broke it into pieces, which he gave to the followers to give to the people.

17 They all ate until they were full. And there was a lot of food left. Twelve baskets were filled with the pieces of food that were not eaten.

18 One time Jesus was praying alone. His followers came together there, and he asked them, "Who do the people say I am?"

19 They answered, "Some people say you are John the Baptizer. Others say you are Elijah. And some people say you are one of the prophets from long ago that has come back to life."

20 Then Jesus said to his followers, "And who do you say I am?" Peter answered, "You are the Christ from God."

21 Jesus warned them not to tell anyone.

22 Then Jesus said, "The Son of Man must suffer many things. He will be rejected by the older Jewish leaders, the leading priests, and teachers of the law. And he will be killed. But after three days he will be raised from death."

23 Jesus continued to say to all of them, "Any of you who want to be my follower must stop thinking about yourself and what you want. You must be willing to carry the cross that is given to you every day for following me.

24 Any of you who try to save the life you have will lose it. But you who give up your life for me will save it.

25 It is worth nothing for you to have the whole world if you yourself are destroyed or lost.

26 Don't be ashamed of me and my teaching. If that happens, I will be ashamed of you when I come with my divine greatness and that of the Father and the holy angels.

27 Believe me when I say that some of you people standing here will see God's kingdom before you die."

29 While Jesus was praying, his face began to change. His clothes became shining white.

34 While Peter was saying these things, a cloud came all around them. Peter, John, and James were afraid when the cloud covered them.

35 A voice came from the cloud and said, "This is my Son. He is the one I have chosen. Obey him."

36 When the voice stopped, only Jesus was there. Peter, John, and James said nothing. And for a long time after that they told no one about what they had seen.

37 The next day, Jesus, Peter, John, and James came down from the mountain. A large group of people met Jesus.

38 A man in the group shouted to him, "Teacher, please come and look at my son. He is the only child I have.

39 An evil spirit comes into him, and then he shouts. He loses control of himself and foams at the mouth. The evil spirit continues to hurt him and almost never leaves him.

40 I begged your followers to make the evil spirit leave my son, but they could not do it."

41 Jesus answered, "You people today have no faith. Your lives are all wrong. How long must I be with you and be patient with you?" Then Jesus said to the man, "Bring your son here."

42 While the boy was coming, the demon threw the boy to the ground. The boy lost control of himself. But Jesus gave a strong command to the evil spirit. Then the boy was healed, and Jesus gave him back to his father.

43 All the people were amazed at the great power of God. The people were still amazed about all the things Jesus did. He said to his followers,

44 "Don't forget what I will tell you now: The Son of Man will soon be handed over to the control of other men."

45 But the followers did not understand what he meant. The meaning was hidden from them so that they could not understand it. But they were afraid to ask Jesus about what he said.

46 Jesus' followers began to have an argument about which one of them was the greatest.

47 Jesus knew what they were thinking, so he took a little child and stood the child beside him.

48 Then he said to the followers, "Whoever accepts a little child like this in my name is accepting me. And anyone who accepts me is also accepting the one who sent me. The one among you who is the most humble—this is the one who is great."

49 John answered, "Master, we saw someone using your name to force demons out of people. We told him to stop because he does not belong to our group."

50 Jesus said to him, "Don't stop him. Whoever is not against you is for you."

51 The time was coming near when Jesus would leave and go back to heaven. He decided to go to Jerusalem.

52 He sent some men ahead of him. They went into a town in Samaria to make everything ready for him.

53 But the people there would not welcome Jesus because he was going toward Jerusalem.

54 James and John, the followers of Jesus, saw this. They said, "Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven and destroy those people?"

55 But Jesus turned and criticized them for saying this.

56 Then he and his followers went to another town.

57 They were all traveling along the road. Someone said to Jesus, "I will follow you anywhere you go."

58 He answered, "The foxes have holes to live in. The birds have nests. But the Son of Man has no place where he can rest his head."

59 Jesus said to another man, "Follow me!" But the man said, "Lord, let me go and bury my father first."

39 See, a demon takes him and makes him cry out. It takes hold of him and makes him shake. Spit runs from his mouth. He has marks on his body from being hurt. The demon does not want to go from him.

40 I begged Your followers to put the demon out, but they could not."

41 Then Jesus said, "You people of this day do not have faith. You turn from what is right! How long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring your son to Me."

42 While the boy was coming, the demon threw him down and made him lose the use of his mind for awhile. Jesus spoke sharp words to the demon. He healed the child and gave him back to his father.

43 They were all surprised at the great power of God. They all were thinking about the special things Jesus had done. And Jesus said to His followers,

44 "Remember these words. For the Son of Man will be given over into the hands of men."

45 They did not understand these words because it was hidden from them. They did not know what Jesus meant and were afraid to ask Him.

46 The followers argued among themselves about which of them would be the greatest.

47 Jesus knew what they were thinking. He put a child beside Him.

48 He said to the followers, "Whoever receives this child in My name, receives Me. Whoever receives Me, receives Him Who sent Me. The one who is least among you is the one who is great."

49 John said, "Teacher, we saw someone putting out demons in Your name. We told him to stop because he was not following us."

50 Jesus said to him, "Do not stop him. He who is not against us is for us."

51 It was about time for Jesus to be taken up into heaven. He turned toward Jerusalem and was sure that nothing would stop Him from going.

52 He sent men on ahead of Him. They came to a town in Samaria. There they got things ready for Jesus.

53 The people did not want Him there because they knew He was on His way to Jerusalem.

54 James and John, His followers, saw this. They said, "Lord, do You want us to speak so fire will come down from heaven and burn them up as Elijah did?"

55 Jesus turned and spoke sharp words to them. (*He said, "You do not know what kind of spirit you have.

56 The Son of Man did not come to destroy men's lives. He came to save them from the punishment of sin." They went on their way to another town.)

57 As they were going on their way, a man said to Jesus, "Lord, I will follow You wherever You go."

58 Jesus said to him, "Foxes have holes. Birds of the sky have nests. The Son of Man has no place to put His head."

59 He said to another, "Follow Me." But the man said, "Lord, let me go first and bury my father."

60 Jesus said to him, "Let the people who are dead bury their own dead. You go and preach about the holy nation of God."

61 And another one said, "Lord, I will follow You, but first let me go and say good-bye to those at home."

4 When you enter a house, stay there until it is time to leave.

7 Herod, the governor, heard about all the things that were happening and was confused, because some people said, "John the Baptist has risen from the dead."

8 Others said, "Elijah has come to us." And still others said, "One of the prophets who lived long ago has risen from the dead."

9 Herod said, "I cut off John's head, so who is this man I hear such things about?" And Herod kept trying to see Jesus.

10 When the apostles returned, they told Jesus everything they had done. Then Jesus took them with him to a town called Bethsaida where they could be alone together.

11 But the people learned where Jesus went and followed him. He welcomed them and talked with them about God's kingdom and healed those who needed to be healed.

12 Late in the afternoon, the twelve apostles came to Jesus and said, "Send the people away. They need to go to the towns and countryside around here and find places to sleep and something to eat, because no one lives in this place."

13 But Jesus said to them, "You give them something to eat." They said, "We have only five loaves of bread and two fish, unless we go buy food for all these people."

14 (There were about five thousand men there.) Jesus said to his followers, "Tell the people to sit in groups of about fifty people."

15 So the followers did this, and all the people sat down.

16 Then Jesus took the five loaves of bread and two fish, and looking up to heaven, he thanked God for the food. Then he divided the food and gave it to the followers to give to the people.

17 They all ate and were satisfied, and what was left over was gathered up, filling twelve baskets.

18 One time when Jesus was praying alone, his followers were with him, and he asked them, "Who do the people say I am?"

19 They answered, "Some say you are John the Baptist. Others say you are Elijah. And others say you are one of the prophets from long ago who has come back to life."

20 Then Jesus asked, "But who do you say I am?" Peter answered, "You are the Christ from God."

21 Jesus warned them not to tell anyone, saying,

22 "The Son of Man must suffer many things. He will be rejected by the older Jewish leaders, the leading priests, and the teachers of the law. He will be killed and after three days will be raised from the dead."

23 Jesus said to all of them, "If people want to follow me, they must give up the things they want. They must be willing to give up their lives daily to follow me.

24 Those who want to save their lives will give up true life. But those who give up their lives for me will have true life.

25 It is worth nothing for them to have the whole world if they themselves are destroyed or lost.

26 If people are ashamed of me and my teaching, then the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory and with the glory of the Father and the holy angels.

27 I tell you the truth, some people standing here will see the kingdom of God before they die."

28 About eight days after Jesus said these things, he took Peter, John, and James and went up on a mountain to pray.

29 While Jesus was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became shining white.

30 Then two men, Moses and Elijah, were talking with Jesus.

31 They appeared in heavenly glory, talking about his departure which he would soon bring about in Jerusalem.

32 Peter and the others were very sleepy, but when they awoke fully, they saw the glory of Jesus and the two men standing with him.

33 When Moses and Elijah were about to leave, Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents -- one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." (Peter did not know what he was talking about.)

34 While he was saying these things, a cloud came and covered them, and they became afraid as the cloud covered them.

35 A voice came from the cloud, saying, "This is my Son, whom I have chosen. Listen to him!"

36 When the voice finished speaking, only Jesus was there. Peter, John, and James said nothing and told no one at that time what they had seen.

37 The next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met Jesus.

38 A man in the crowd shouted to him, "Teacher, please come and look at my son, because he is my only child.

39 An evil spirit seizes my son, and suddenly he screams. It causes him to lose control of himself and foam at the mouth. The evil spirit keeps on hurting him and almost never leaves him.

40 I begged your followers to force the evil spirit out, but they could not do it."

41 Jesus answered, "You people have no faith, and your lives are all wrong. How long must I stay with you and put up with you? Bring your son here."

48 Then Jesus said, "Whoever accepts this little child in my name accepts me. And whoever accepts me accepts the One who sent me, because whoever is least among you all is really the greatest."

49 John answered, "Master, we saw someone using your name to force demons out of people. We told him to stop, because he does not belong to our group."

50 But Jesus said to him, "Don't stop him, because whoever is not against you is for you."

51 When the time was coming near for Jesus to depart, he was determined to go to Jerusalem.

52 He sent some men ahead of him, who went into a town in Samaria to make everything ready for him.

53 But the people there would not welcome him, because he was set on going to Jerusalem.

55 But He turned and rebuked them,

56 and they went to another village.
